Introduction

Our islands' mosses and liverworts have long been neglected, so there is scope for anyone to make a valuable contribution to our understanding of their occurrence, distribution and ecology. Yet the want of a field-guide to mosses and liverworts has for many years hindered the spread of interest in British field-bryology. A team of expert bryologists, under the aegis of the British Bryological Society,  has now produced the only modern field guide to mosses and liverworts of Britain and Ireland, enabling you to identify many of these with a hand lens in the field.

The purpose of this website is to:

  1. Provide a convenient means to submit comments and corrections to the published pages of the book;
  2. Continually update online the text, maps and illustrations in constituent pages of the book.

It is envisaged that new editions of the book will be published every few years as sufficient new material becomes available.

How to use this website

This major part of this website consists of pages from the published Field Guide  presented as Portable Document Format (PDF) files. These can be found under the Species Accounts menu on the left.  To view these your web browser will need a suitable "plug-in". You will probably find that your browser already has such a plug-in installed but if not you will likely be prompted to install one and instructed how to do so when you attempt to load one of the PDF files.

Some of the PDFs are quite large files and may take a few moments to load. However, once they have been loaded once they should display much quicker on subsequent occasions.

Anyone can view the content on the website, but if you wish to be able to provide feedback on the content you will need  to register an account. This is a one-off process, costs nothing,  and is easy to do -  simply follow the "Create new account link" and choose a user name and password; you will also be asked to supply a valid email address, and - to combat "spam" - to copy a series of letters that will be displayed to you as an image file.
